The Everest Base Camp Trek takes you to conquer the grandeur of the Himalayas in nature’s grandest setting. The mighty Mount Everest, standing at an incredible elevation of 8,848.86 m, is the highest place on Earth. Conquering the Everest summit may not be possible for every adventurer, but winning the foot of Everest can be another alternative for anyone who is seeking adventure and thrill.

Our 15-day Everest Base Camp Trek is a classic mainstream trek in Nepal that will take you to the heart of the Khumbu region. You will start your trek with a scenic flight from Kathmandu to Lukla. Exploring the highlights of the trek en route, you will be able to catch a first glimpse of Mount Everest in no time after you walk on the EBC trail.

Progressing with each day in the Everest base camp journey, you will pass by many charming Sherpa settlements like Phakding, Namche Bazaar, Tengboche, Dingboche, and Gorakshep. This will provide you with insights into the higher Himalayan life.

Kalapatthar is another main highlight of the Everest Base Camp trekking. Hiking to this viewpoint in the early morning offers you a 360-degree panoramic mountain view, including Mt. Everest, Mt. Nuptse, Mt. Lhotse, Mt. Pumori, and Mt. Ama Dablam. Hence, the EBC trek is an incredible way to embrace the serenity of the Himalayas in an enchanting landscape alongside the magic of nature.

    • You will witness the panorama of the mountain, including Mount Everest, Lhotse, Nuptse, Ama Dablam, Cho Oyu, Pumori, etc.
    • Golden hues over the snow-capped mountains by the rising sun from Kalapatthar is a can-not-miss part of the journey.
    • The morning and evening prayers at the Tengboche monastery will cleanse your soul.
    • Starting your journey with a thrilling flight from Kathmandu to Lukla, one of the world’s most exciting airports, with mountain views right from the start.

What is the Distance and Height of the Everest Base Camp Trek?

You will have to cover approximately 130 km(80 miles) trekking from Lukla to Base camp and Kalapatthar and return to Lukla. This distance is just for the classic EBC trek route. If you are embarking on the Everest base camp trek via Gokyo or other trekking routes, then this distance may vary.

The Everest base camp at an incredible height of 5364 m is definitely the final milestone of the trek. However, this trek elevates you above the base camp at Kalapatthar. This vantage point is located at an altitude of 5545 m.

How Long is the Everest Base Camp Trek?

When it comes to the Mount Everest base camp trek, it can be completed within 10 to 20 days. If you do not include acclimatization days, then this trek can be short. This way, you will increase the risk of altitude sickness. However, including altitude sickness can make your journey long for 2-3 days, but it will definitely be precautionary about AMS.

Furthermore, in this 10-20 day trek, you will have to walk roughly 5 to 8 hours to cover 10 to 15 km per day.

Where does the  Everest Base Camp Trekking Start and End?

Usually, trekkers prefer to start this trek by taking a short 40-minute flight from Kathmandu to Lukla and start the trek therefrom. However, during the peak season, you cannot get a direct flight from Kathmandu to Lukla. Your flight will be diverted to Manthali airport. So, you will have to take a road drive from Kathmandu to Ramechhap and take a flight to Lukla to start the trek.

Likewise, if you don't like to take airways, then you can take a bus or jeep up to Jiri and Salleri and trek from thereon. However, this may take an extra few days. Moreover, most of the trekkers end their journey at Lukla, whether they take the classic EBC trek or the Gokyo Ri Cho La Pass Everest Base Camp Trek.

What is the Cost of the Everest Base Camp Trek?

The Everest Base Camp Trek cost will be around $1100 – $3000 per person. Usually EBC cost can be both budget-friendly and luxurious, depending on what kind of trekking you want. Our Everest Base Camp Trek package includes all the accommodations, permits, guides, porters, and meals in the trek. Moreover, we provide you Kathmandu sightseeing tour included in the package of USD 1600 per person.

What is the Best Time for the  Everest Base Camp Trek?

The Everest region welcomes all the trekkers and adventurers all year round. Even though trekkers have successfully completed this rewarding trek in all four seasons, spring(March to May) and autumn(September to November) are considered feasible times to embark on this trek.

The weather and trail conditions, along with longer days, make this time of the year a peak season for trekking. Spring brings nature alive after the freezing winter in the Khumbu region. You can witness the rhododendron blooming and animals out of hibernation in the Sagarmatha National Park. Moreover, the stable temperature with a low probability of snowfall offers ideal trekking conditions.

The post-monsoon, Autumn season also offers clear skies and a panorama of mountain views. With a low probability of rainfall, you can enjoy walking on the dry trails. Moreover, festivals like Mani Rimdu spread the unique charm in the Tengboche region. Off-season EBC trekking is also doable; however, necessary preparations should be made for a successful journey. You should pack warm clothes to cope with the freezing cold of winter. Likewise, proper gear and equipment should be packed to walk on the slippery and muddy trails during the monsoon.

How Difficult is the Everest Base Camp Trek?

Climbing Mount Everest is hard, but what about reaching Mount Everest Base Camp? The answer to this question is that EBC is far more accessible than the Everest Summit, but it is still demanding and strenuous. Walking continuously on the Himalayan trails for more than 12 days, covering about 130 km, can be extremely exhausting, especially if you are a beginner. Moreover, elevation gain above 5000 m makes this trek more difficult.

Walking on the uneven terrain with steep ascents and descents can test your strength and endurance. On top of that, some sections like Gorakshep to base camp require you to walk on the long boulders and glacial moraines. The early morning hike to Kalapatthar in cold temperatures can add difficulty to your journey.

Is the  Everest Base Camp Trek Suitable For Me?

If you ask, who can do the Everest Base Camp Trek, we recommend the EBC trek for everyone. However, the thing is this trek demands a good level of physical fitness, mental determination, and proper preparation to handle the altitude and long trekking days.

If you have a good fitness level and mental endurance, you can successfully complete this trek. Moreover, your trekking experience can come in handy during this trek. That doesn't mean that if you don't have any prior trekking experience, you cannot complete this trek. Everest Base Camp Trek for beginners is definitely feasible, but with the right preparation.
However, if you are someone who has any medical conditions like joint issues or respiratory, or heart issues, we strongly recommend that you consult with your doctor first.

Meals on the Everest Base Camp Trek

Usually, the teahouses will offer you a wide variety of food options from Nepalese staple Daal Bhaat Tarkari, regional foods, local foods, to other foreign cuisines. While you are trekking up high in the Himalayas, you should not miss out on eating local foods like rildok, butter tea, khapse, tsampa etc.

Accommodations on the Everest Base Camp Trek

The Everest Base Camp Trekking is one of the mainstream trekking route in Nepal. Even though this trek lies in a remote area, the trails are well established with good accommodation facilities. Trust us when we say, during your exploration in Namche Bazaar, you will not think this place is high up in the mountains.

You will feel as if you are in some kind of mini city, bustling with shops, bakeries, cafes, and trekkers from all around the world. As you ascend to the higher altitude, teahouses and lodges offer you rooms on a twin-sharing basis with a moderate level of services.

Preparation For the Everest Base Camp Trekking

The long hours walking while ascending to higher altitudes in uneven terrain can be quite daunting. So weeks before preparation will help you build good level of physical fitness. You can do strength training exercises like push-ups, planks, squats, and mountain climbers to increase your leg strength. Moreover, cardio training like brisk walking, running, swimming, water aerobics, jogging, and cycling will help to increase your endurance.

We highly recommend that you go on high-altitude hiking by carrying some luggage. This will give you a general idea about trekking and walking while carrying weights. Mental preparation is also equally important as physical preparation. Your mental state will help you complete this trek when your legs slow down due to exhaustion and fatigue.

Trekking Permit for Everest Base Camp Trek

You will need two trekking permits in nepal to complete the Everest Base Camp Trek.

    • Sagarmatha National Park Permit
    • Khumbu Pasang Lhamu Rural Municipality Permit

These permits can be checked at different checkpoints in the Khumbu region. So, make sure you carry the permits with you everywhere.

Altitude Sickness in Everest Base Camp Trek

The Everest Base Camp Trek itinerary of 15 days will elevate you from Lukla, Namche Bazaar, Dingboche, Gorakshep, base camp, and finally Kalapatthar. Ascending above 3000 m already increases the risk of high-altitude sickness. On top of that, you are climbing above 5000 m, so there are more chances of high altitude sickness in the Himalayan Trekking Everest Base Camp.

So, you should do proper high-altitude acclimatization. Whether you are going on short hikes during acclimatization days or staying hydrated, eating nutritious food, walking at a slow pace, etc, you should let your body acclimatize to the lower oxygen of high altitude to avoid altitude sickness.
