Overview of Jomsom Muktinath Trek – 15 Days

The Jomsom Muktinath Trek is the ideal journey where spiritual peace meets the raw beauty of the high Himalayas. The magnificent blend of the Annapurna and Mustang regions, the Nepal Jomsom Muktinath Trek offers a stark yet mesmerizing contrast between the desert-like landscapes and lush greenery against the majestic backdrop of the Himalayas.

The Jomsom Muktinath Trekking itinerary often begins by walking on the trails from Nayapul. As you proceed with the trek, you will come across the charming place of Ghorepani. After soaking in the amazing views from the Ghorepani Poon Hill trek, you will descend towards Tatopani. This place is famous for the natural hot springs. So, relaxing at the hot spring is a must, isn't it?

With the trek progressing each day, you will come across the historic trade route that previously connected India and Tibet. The two main highlights of this rewarding trek are Jomsom and Muktinath. The sacred site of Muktinath is a revered pilgrimage destination for both Hindus and Buddhists. This temple is devoted to Lord Vishnu. It is believed that taking a bath on all 108 sprouts will wash away all your sins.

Likewise, Jomsom is an administrative center of both Lower and Upper Mustang, lying as a windswept town of the Kali Gandaki gorge. The incredible blend of Hindu and Tibetan culture exhibits the simple way of living high up in the Himalayas. Hence, this trek promises an unforgettable memory, walking you through stunning landscapes, rich culture, and spiritual discovery.

What is the Cost of the Jomsom Muktinath Trek?

There are various factors like itinerary, routes, highlights, services, etc that determine the cost of the trek. If you are planning for a short trek with limited services, then the cost of trekking to Jomsom Muktinath may be low. However, if you want a comparatively long journey with good services, then the cost will be higher. Hence, the cost of the Jomsom Muktinath trek can be around $650 to $2000.

If you include the Annapurna Circuit Trek in your Jomsom Muktinath itinerary, then the Annapurna Circuit trek cost will be directly included in the price and cost you higher like $2000. Best Time for the Jomsom Muktinath Trek

If you are thinking of embarking on the Jomsom Muktinath trek, then we recommend that you plan your trek during spring(March to May) and autumn(September to November). Do not take it wrong. Monsoon and winter seasons are also equally rewarding for this trek, but when it comes to favorable weather, trails, etc, spring and autumn seasons will offer you the most out of it.

The pleasant climate and blue skies will offer you crystal clear views of the majestic snow-capped mountains, including Dhaulagiri, Nilgiri, Tukuche, Annapurna I, III, etc. Moreover, the dry trails after the monsoon rain make walking on the trails easy and comfortable. The striking contrast of lush vegetation to alpine barren meadows will definitely keep you in awe. The grand festival celebrations during these seasons allow you to join the culture and tradition of the local people.

During the monsoon season, the lush vegetation of the Annapurna Conservation Area thrives with the excessive rainfall. However, you have to walk on the slippery and muddy trails with bites from leeches and other insects. Likewise, during winter, the lower mustang is beautifully covered with the white blanket of snow, providing you with a picturesque white view. However, the chilly weather and slippery trail covered with snow can make the trek inconvenient.

How Difficult is the Jomsom Muktinath Trek?

The Jomsom trekking can be considered a moderate trekking in Nepal. This journey doesn't possess any technical climbing and moderate elevation gain. Moreover, the trails are well established and marked, making it easy for trekkers. However, some sections can be uneven and rocky. The trails from Kagbeni to Jomsom can be dry and dusty. Moreover, you have to follow the trails of the Kali Gandaki gorge, which can be quite windy during the afternoon. So, with enough packing preparation and starting the trek early, you can easily complete this trek.

Is the Jomsom Muktinath Trek for Beginners?

Yes, Absolutely. If you are a beginner thinking about trekking to Jomsom Muktinath, this trek is totally doable. You will need a good level of physical fitness with no prior trekking experience to embark on this trek. The moderate elevation to maximum altitude of about 3700 m and well-established treks make this journey one of the best treks for beginners.

This trek offers you the best of both worlds, the lush greenery of the lower Annapurna region and arid desert landscapes of the lower Mustang region. However, you will have to walk long hours of 5 to 7 hours daily to cover 10 to 12 km. As a beginner, walking for such long hours while ascending to higher altitudes can be exhausting. Hence, if you have enough physical and mental preparation with enough precautions for altitude sickness, you can totally nail this trek.

Do you need a permit for Jomsom?

Since Jomsom lies within the Annapurna Conservation Area, you will need to get an Annapurna Conservation Area Permit(ACAP). This permit in nepal will cost you around NRS 3000(around $30) for foreign nationals and NRS 1000 for nationals of SAARC countries. However, children under the age of 10 do not require any permit. You can obtain this permit from the Nepal Tourism Board office in Kathmandu and Pokhara.
