The Jomsom Muktinath Trek is an exhilarating and unique adventure through the Annapurna and Mustang regions of Nepal. The Mustang region is renowned for its distinctive dry landscape, set against the backdrop of the majestic Himalayan ranges.
This area reflects the diverse cultures of the Thakali, Gurung, and Magar communities. The Kali Gandaki Valley, spanning from Jomsom to Muktinath, is situated to the north of Pokhara and is known for its dramatic altitude changes, making it one of the most striking regions in Nepal.
One of the highlights of this trek is the breathtaking sunrise at Poon Hill, followed by a descent to Tatopani, where you can relax in natural hot springs. Along the way, you'll also pass through the world’s deepest gorge, carved by the powerful Kali Gandaki River between the towering peaks of Dhaulagiri and Annapurna.
Jomsom, the administrative hub of both Lower and Upper Mustang, lies along the Kali Gandaki Valley, a historic trade route linking India and Tibet through the ancient Trans-Himalayan salt trade. The journey culminates at Muktinath, a sacred site revered by both Hindus and Buddhists. Muktinath, also known as Shaligram in the ancient epic Mahabharata, is believed to be the place where the creator Brahma offered himself by setting fire to water. Below the main Hindu temple, you'll find a small Buddhist shrine, Gomba, where you can witness the phenomenon of natural gas combustion.
Throughout the trek, you’ll be surrounded by stunning views of towering peaks, including Machhapuchhre (Fishtail), the Annapurna Range, Nilgiri, and Dhaulagiri, offering some of the most awe-inspiring panoramas in the world.
